As a passionate advocate for holistic wellness, I believe that embracing the power of nature through herbalism can be transformative for our overall well-being. Today, I am excited to share with you the art of crafting nourishing herbal elixirs that can be a delightful addition to your wellness journey.
Understanding Herbal Elixirs
Herbal elixirs are potent infusions created by blending various herbs, plants, and other natural ingredients in a liquid base such as raw apple cider vinegar, honey, or alcohol. These elixirs are not only flavorful but also offer a myriad of health benefits, making them a popular choice among individuals striving for holistic wellness.
Benefits of Herbal Elixirs
Incorporating herbal elixirs into your routine can provide a wide range of benefits. From supporting digestion and boosting immunity to promoting relaxation and enhancing mental clarity, the potential advantages of herbal elixirs are numerous. By harnessing the power of herbs, you can nourish your body and mind in a gentle yet effective manner.
Crafting Your Own Herbal Elixirs
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
To create a nourishing herbal elixir, you will need a selection of high-quality herbs that align with your wellness goals. Whether you opt for calming chamomile, invigorating ginger, or immune-boosting echinacea, carefully selecting your ingredients is key to crafting a personalized elixir. Ideally source local and organic herbs. At Sweet Birch Herbals, we grow over 50 kinds so if you are searching for any in particular, reach out.
Herbs for infusing: lavender, rose, tulsi holy basil, garden sage, thyme, rosemary, chamomile, nettles, milky oat tops, lilacs, hibiscus, orange peel, schisandra berries, echinacea, hawthorn berry - to name a few of my favorites. The more aromatic the plant, the more flavorful your elixir.
Step 2: Prepare Your Infusion
Begin by infusing your chosen herbs in a liquid base such as raw apple cider vinegar, honey, or brandy. Typically for a delicious tasting elixir, use 75% apple cider vinegar (or brandy) and 25% honey. Adjust the ratio if you prefer more sweetness. Fill your jar 1/3 of the way with dried herbs or 2/3 of the way if using fresh herbs, chopped.
Allow the herbs to steep in the base for an adequate amount of time to extract their beneficial properties fully, typically 2-3 weeks. This process allows the flavors and healing properties of the herbs to meld together while extracting the medicinal constituents, creating a harmonious blend. If using apple cider vinegar and honey, this is called an Oxymel: Oxy (vinegar) and mel (honey).
Step 3: Strain and Store
Once your infusion is complete after a few weeks, strain out the herbs through a sieve or cheesecloth and transfer the elixir into a clean container. Properly labeled and stored in a cool, dark place, your herbal elixir can last for an extended period, ready to be enjoyed whenever you need a boost of herbal vitality.
Dosage is 1-2 tablespoons per day taken straight or added to water, tea or seltzer. Your elixir can be a base for mixed drinks, mocktails, switchels and more! Play around with the flavors from each herb on their own, or mix a few herbs together in one jar. For a calming blend to relieve anxiety I enjoy tulsi, rose, lavender and chamomile.
Soon your cabinet will be filled with herbal goodness and you will need a whole pantry! That's how it all began for me. Now my apothecary is over 800 square feet. And a barn on the way, so watch out! Herbalism can take over one's life (in a good way).
