During my morning meditation, I heard a stern voice through my mind's chatter, "YOU WERE BORN FOR THIS MOMENT IN TIME."
And so were YOU.
Today marks the beginning of a new cycle that will test our spirits and hearts. It is the beginning of putting all we have gathered, learned and prepared into action.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."
Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and today we need his words more than ever to remind us of our innate goodness. Our desire to live in a more just and equitable world is still possible despite the political scene across the U.S.
How can we choose love over hate on this day and every day? Let us transform the dark thoughts toward other humans into light so we can create more space in our hearts for hope.
“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Having the courage to choose love over hate it no small feat. I have dipped my toes in despair this week only to remember all of the work I have done up to now was for this moment. My mental and emotional strength will not be rocked be darkness. I am solid. I know why I am here. The plants have claimed me as their humble servant, and guided me when I have felt lost.
I call on the courage and strength of our plant allies to be with us all:
Hawthorn - fortifying the heart during dark times
Rose - softening the harshness with gentleness
Motherwort - fierce lion-hearted courage when giving up is not an option
Tulsi - sovereign, unwavering commitment to the great green world
Mugwort - wise woman, elder, truth seer
Yarrow - protection and firm boundaries
May these beings fortify our souls and remind us that we are all made of love.
“We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” - MLK Jr.
